Big Brother is an annual ritual in my household. I started watching it in Season 1, 10 years ago, when I first moved out of my house and got my own place. When I moved in with my brother and his girlfriend, he used to make fun of me for watching it. Then one day he sat down and watched it with me and was hooked himself. Since my two former housemates have moved out, it’s back to solo Big Brother viewing, but all the rituals remain the same. So here we are in the 12th iteration, and while the contestants and CBS’s gimmicky twists are always changing, some things remain the same.
One thing that will never change is that Big Brother is the greatest reality TV show ever. Not only is it an exercise in Machiavellianism and greed at its finest, but it is one show where the producers interfere the least with the action in the house, and let things run their course. I also like that even though there can be alliances in the house, no one voting block can ever fully overpower the others because Head of Household ensures that the power shifts continuously throughout the game and forces the players to adapt.
